General Choi, Hong Hi. 9th Degree (Founder of Taekwondo)
Taekwondo is an ancient form of unarmed combat and self defence. 'Tae' means to jump, kick or smash with the foot, 'Kwon' means to punch, strike or destroy with the hand and 'Do' is the art, method or way. Taekwondo is more than a mere use of skilled movements, it also promotes a way of life with a strong sway towards the more philosophical side, partically instilling a concept and spirit of self imposed discipline and an idea of noble moral re-armament.
Tae Kwon-Do is a Korean martial art, which will teach you how to use punches, kicks, blocks, dodges and restraints to defend yourself. Most of all Taekwondo is about self-imposed discipline, fitness and inner peace. The sport is loved by children and adults, as it builds a level of confidence unsurpassed by any other form of exercise. The system of training is based on inner development and self-expression, concentration, focus, goal setting and self-achievement. Co-ordination, flexibility and self-awareness are the basics to the physical training and you'll learn to stretch and exercise nearly every muscle group in your body. That aspect alone distinguishes the art & sport from most others. But it’s the emphasis on improved concentration, stamina and self-control that really sets Taekwondo apart from other disciplines. To develop those skills, you'll exercise your mind at least as much as your body. And the positive effects of that exercise will carry over into other areas of your life too!
Tenets of Taekwondo
'Talk If You Will, Walk Away If You Can, Run If You Must, But If All Else Fails, DEFEND YOURSELF!'
Adults
In these days of violance and intimidation which seam to plague our modern societies, Taekwondo enables the weak or less confident to possess a fine weapon to defend themselves. Adults start Taekwondo for many different reasons. Some to learn self defence and get fit. Several to build confidence and become more assertive. Many start because they want to do something different and exciting. Often people have joined the ‘gym’ and have become bored by the repetitive exercising and have lost enthusiasm! So why is Taekwondo different? Firstly the classes are fun and enjoyable, every class is different. You may get tired, sweaty, feel excited, fulfilled and challenged, but you will never get bored! Importantly you will learn a skill that will keep you safe, fit and healthy and your confidence levels will rocket and your stress levels fall. Because you train together in a group of like minded people you will build friendships and team spirit.
Children
Children benefit massively from Taekwondo. Martial Arts training, it is arguably the best method of instilling confidence into children and at the same time emphasises the importance of respect and discipline. As a result of the fast and exciting nature of Martial Arts there are thousands of children and adults participating throughout the UK and worldwide there are millions. Isn’t it time you joined them?. All TAGB instructors are DBS (enhanced) checked and have first aid, health & safety, child protection, instruction and coaching certificates.
In today’s world parents need extra help reinforcing respect, courtesy and self-discipline. These are part of every day lessons at our school. We teach much more than kicking and punching, we teach life skills. With the ever increasing risk of bullying, obesity and the stresses of today's society, children need to be more focused and resilient. With Taekwondo they will learn to protect themselves, become more confident and focused. Also to become better people, which is lacking with today's youth and while doing all this without even realising it, they will be getting fitter in both body & mind!
